Funny fact: most Roman people hate that monument; they call it "the wedding cake." I was amazed to hear all the different reasons (they had plenty) and how universal their disdain for it was.

I liked it, but I kept my opinion to myself.

I think if it was older, or if it had been planned out in a more historically respectful way, it would be fine. But as it is, it's a weird neo-Roman monument plopped in a spot that doesn't make sense when considering the original layout of the city and it's the focal point of a giant ceremonial road that they bulldozed buildings to build, which automatically makes it an eyesore. Imagine if Washington DC had evolved a natural city layout akin to European cities, but then in the 1930s we went and cleared out the middle of it to build the National Mall and plop down the Capitol building.
