The saturated market of breweries is no cohencidence today either. Even if any came about in their own merit, the bankers have been very generous in loaning money to a business that has pretty slim margins
You make a good point that they're willing to do slim margin loans if it's for a 'vice' industry or other industries that fit their plans (DEI industries). However, I'll take a saturated market over a near monopoly. In 1978 there were only 89 breweries. 75% of all beer consumed came from only 5 breweries.
