You'd be surprised how little power politicians have. They can screw up the lives of the little people with broad policies but really can't do anything against individuals, especially if they also have power (and it doesn't sound like he was even able to identify the person who was ultimately responsible).
If he were crooked, he could do something illegal or unethical to take these people down, but then he would only do that to enrich himself.
