When I lived in an apartment I had a window that opened vertically and horizontally. In order to switch it had to be closed, the handle turned and opened again.
One time the window was vertically open, and a small bird somehow managed to get caught in the gap and was unable to get out. It was quite a nasty spot as I could barely reach it. Closing the window would have killed it, so I couldn't open it horizontally.
It took me 3 hours to find a way to get it out. I used some rope and managed to pull it upward so that it got out and fell down the area next to it. I finally opened the window, took the bird and brought it inside. I gave it some bread crumbs from my toaster (I had nothing else for it) and placed it in a corner between boxes as shelter. It was quite tame, but to be fair it was exhausted and injured at the neck. It seemed like it blacked out for a moment all the time. I even gave it something round to stand on, because the ground was flat and its feet was suited for something like a branch.
The next day it looked better, so I decided to bring it outside. First it didn't move much, so I walked around and waited. After some minutes it started to fly again, and on the second attempt it managed to fly away.
The talons and beak are like razor blades. If I'm being honest I'd probably not help because I'd probably approach scared and then it would think I'm going to kill it
