American lines were screwed with an extreme slant they shouldn't have that caused hip problems. You pretty much have 3 major differences though you will always have some exceptions. The Czech's and Eastern German Sheps are more function than looks like most Malnois, the West German valued looks more which is how the American lines got in trouble going to extremes with that slant.

Malnois and Eastern/Czech Sheps are usually what you see as the high prey drive working dogs and Western lines win the looks departments though my last Eastern was really pretty. I would use different ones for different applications. Malnois are the perfect size for a lot of things and the Sheps can be more intimidating.

I would not advise Eastern, Czech or Malnois unless you are 100 percent going to train that dog and spend a lot of time with it. If you do they are the best dog you could hope to own. If you don't they will terrorize the neighbors at the fence line due to being bored, take a piece of the mailman and destroy your shit.

Border Collies are the same way minus being a legitimate threat. Them =bored = trouble. Same goes for other smart animals. A bored crow is a nightmare waiting to happen for other animals. These working lines are just too smart to be a typical house dog.
