What items will be considered valuable in a great economic depression? Here's what I think will be:

1. Food - Seeds, eggs, meat will be the most valuable

2. Purified Water - a human essential

3. Livestock

4. Ammo - Never bring a knife to a gun fight

5. Precious metals - Gold and silver will continue to be used as currency

I'm in a small bartering group, there's been no meat or milk offered or requested yet but honey and eggs are the most valuable currently, skilled and heavy labour are rarely traded so far (mostly women so just occasionally offering their husband's as tribute) but highly valued. One thing I've noticed that probably explains meat and milk being absent and eggs and honey being top by far is spoilage - things that last longer go for more - jam is pretty easy to make and comes up occasionally but it's valued way more then berries because it lasts longer. I imagine if someone offered smoked/cured meat and made cheese from milk they would go for a lot. Lemons aren't exactly "expensive" but store for a long time fresh so are usually popular.

Also nobody knows how to light a fire anymore so if you're thinking SHTF then stock up on BIC lighters...also cigarettes.

Bic lighters go dry in hot temps.

I learned this the hard way

Like how hot? I've always assumed that warning meant they could explode if they get hot. I'm always surprised they work after going through the washing machine.

Actually there was the one time one made it all the way until the end of the drier cycle before I noticed it and it didn't explode but it did work (didn't try it straight away, letting it settle felt safer).

Maybe it's extended high temps or that I actually used dollar tree equivalents.

I left 6 lighters in my car and they all died
