There's no effective way to immediately end it, we already know that firewalls and removal of content are meme strategies, but culture change in general would do away with nearly all of it in due time. If the general consensus becomes that x thing is disgusting, it will fade away
There will be niche, hidden corners of the surface web and dark web that still do it, but there's not really a good and long lasting way of dealing with this issue because of internet anonymity, but these corners of society have always existed anyways. There's no way to truly stamp out every single inkling of degeneracy.
Exactly. If something is shamed, if you do it, you do it in private. This means you do it less, and you don't passively encourage other people to ride your bandwagon. That mechanism is incredibly powerful, even if it doesn't completely eradicate it.
I believe that decriminalization of drugs can work and be a good thing, but every time it is tried, it is 1) inherently tried in a place that has already socially destigmatize drug use and 2) used as an excuse to not arrest or prosecute for tangential crimes. If we decriminalize drugs, but still prosecuted for public intoxication and still viewed drug usage as shameful, we would be more successful than we are today where it is illegal.
Likewise, if we keep porn legal, but still prosecute for exposing minors to it, viewing it in public, etc. and still viewed its consumption as shameful, we would be in fantastic shape
Yeah, zog is pretty fucking terrible at removing internet content actually. Not for lack of trying, but because it's virtually Impossible to actually do it. Typically the best they have is memory holing shit whenever the cat gets out of the bag
I know, and it's like a hydra, for every site that bans "wrongthink" there are 2 others that spring up advocating it. If they actually had the means, they would have already done it, but nobody has much effective control over the internet. It's practically impossible, again because of the nature of how the web works. Zog isn't omnipotent, you're giving them a little bit too much credit
Also, I'm not saying it would exist on popular websites, which absolutely would in most cases ban them. I'm saying that it would exist on "alt" sites and on sketchy alleyways of the internet like we currently already do. There's hardly a good way to police this.
Yeah, that’s true, but only a small fraction of the people using the Internet go to these obscure websites.
They know that if they can stop 99% of the people from seeing opposing viewpoints… it’s good enough.
The fact that Twitter has gotten more free recently is kinda a massive win. I don’t know what Elon’s game is here, but I have to admit that it works in our favor.
