The ancient Greeks debated about logic vs. sophistry. Sophistry was the art of convincing people to do what is best for them regardless of the reason. "Here, take this medicine, it is harmless" the sophist will say, knowing that ultimately it will be good for the patient, even though there may be some harm caused by it.

Socrates was a logician. He didn't see the purpose of sophistry.

Subsequent philosophers understood the need for both. You use logic to ensure you are actually correct, and sophistry to convince people of the same.
