Sometimes late at night when I am on a walk, there are spots where I can hear a gentle crescendo, a little symphonic arrangement of beeps from various apartments at various distances with various brands of smoke detectors installed, a little song sung by modern society that tells not of any individual experience, but of our collective woes.
