The car example is stupid. Every other car in Europe was a rebranded fiat, VW, or renault for *years*. SEAT literally exists as rebranded VWs, before that they were fiats. Same as Škoda, and they're some of the most popular vehicles on the road. Dacias are renaults. Chevrolet copied opel. Etc.
And there are original ladas, and UAZs and others. The lada niva is a complete original from the soviet era. Most ladas today *are* originals. A good deal of brands started as a rebadge because of how successful the designs of Ford and Fiat were, they were brilliant cars. Over time, and particularly as the reliability of those 2 brands has been less favorable than they once were, manufacturers started doing different things and started copying japanese manufacturers in particular.
Other people cornered the market before Russia could have ever even hoped to do so. Fiat had pretty much unbeatable cars in Europe at the time and their only real competition was VW. There was a better opportunity to design something reliable by collaborating with Fiat on an existing design and modifying it to suit the needs of eastern europe because the designs worked and the mechanics were sound.

Russia has been heavily sanctioned since the cold war, so it's not like they have good access to western markets.

the only good thing about them are the dumplings, and frankly speaking the dumplings in thai/viet/jap resturants are far superior.
