To be fair those steppe nomads fucked over a lot of people, including the aryan russians and the (at the time) aryan persians, just because they knew the terrain and how to use it too well. Theyre also of tocharian descent, so they had the best of the best genes for doing it. Steppe nomads are no joke. Our own ancestors were steppe nomads who were outnumbered 100:1 by the native population of Europe, and they annihilated the natives far more than the Mongols did to anyone.

The mongols got absolutely fucked in European forests, Vietnamese jungles, and Japanese beaches because it was unfamiliar terrain and they had only experience with steppe, desert, and tundra. Their navy was also a joke. Again, our ancestors didn't do very well in the basque country (too many mountains), Sardinia (Island with beaches), the caucasus (too many mountains) and the urals (too many mountains, see a trend?)

But even in China, after the northern campaign it was a pretty bad trudge through the south, and they only really won because of turncoat Chinese generals and by recruiting native southern Chinese. If neither of those 2 things happened, the Mongols wouldn't have taken China, at least not the southern half of it.
