I wonder if the Brits ever regret the empire, like Americans are regretting slavery.

The consequence of conquering and ruling over other peoples has historically been overexposure to said peoples, integration with them, degeneracy as work (and consequently, de facto authority) is offloaded to foreigners, the dissolution of the empire, and conquest of the original people by foreigners.
