I'm looking to understand Ancient Greek and Roman religion more.
Does anyone have a good list of books that describe the religions?
I absolutely hate secondary sources that are not significantly cited with primary sources. I can't stand reading some author say some sort of commanding sentence like "the ancient Greeks used to sacrifice lambs then piss on the corpses to pay homage to the Gods". If something like that is said, I want it cited with exactly what primary source was used to draw that conclusion.
Anyone have any good recommendations for books?
If you're looking for more scholarly stuff, books like "The Cambridge Companion to Homer" and "Prolegomena to the Study of Greek Religion" might help. I like these two as they do draw from ancient literature and quote extensively from the original sources (though some of the quotations may be in Greek).
