I was in a shopping mall the other day. While I was in the courtyard I noticed periodic flash of light. It was extremely obnoxious and strange. No one else seemed to notice but they all seemed like they’ were in consumerist land. It felt like the atmosphere was conditioning my brain to shut down and be drawn away by all the stores.

The entire atmosphere in such places is artificial. Even the smell of food is fake, it's a scent that they pump into the room through the central air system.
