Christ did not begin with the birth of Jesus. Christ is the Word of God, who was God from the beginning and who is without end. It is through the Word that God communicates to humanity. Most of what was spoken to the Israelites was spoken through the Spirit, which is Christ. This Spirit also spoke through the prophets.

But as far as Jesus speaking, from John 15:

>If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love. 11These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full. 12This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you. 13 __Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.__

This I believe can be interpreted in two ways, both of which are correct. To die the death of the martyr, or to deny your own desires and dedicate your existence on Earth to the community.
