> Fr. Demaris, Professor of theology, wrote this letter at Lyon in 1801. During the French Revolution very many Bishops and priests were martyred for their faith as were many outstanding laymen also martyred. Church property was sized by the Masonic government. That left the people without their priests and without a place to go to Mass and receive the sacraments. It was during that period that Fr. Demaris wrote this letter to the concerned Catholics of his day.

A minority of us tend to view Vatican 2 as a global revolution that has taken away known Catholic clergy for all Catholics today, making this letter's suggestions relevant to the situation Catholics face. Or, geographically some traditionalists feel they lack access to a "traditional" church near them for regular sacraments. Additionally, such a writing I view as giving insight in to a Catholic attitude towards situations where clergy may be absent for whatever reason.
