The Korean people have been entirely separate from the Han Chinese since the beginning of time.
Their two languages and cultures are entirely distinct.
The earliest legends suggest that a group of heavenly people came to Korea and chose the bear clan over the tiger clan. The tiger clan was wiped out, while the heavenly people intermarried with the bear clan, and from there the Korean people were born.
The Korean people were never conquered by the Chinese, though from time to time they did pay tribute to them. The Korean people likely colonized both Vietnam and Japan. The Japanese royalty are likely descended from one of the major families of the Korean royalty.

It wasn't until the mongol invaders raped all the women that Koreans started to look like the others. They used to be quite different. Some of the really old paintings show what the nobility and royalty look like. Even the choseun dynasty has kings with white skin, while the court has darker skin.
