AI right now is just burning extreme amounts of useful energy for some statistical model. Statistics is not science. If your job is making conclusions from statistics, you could be replaced.
Flank pawns were used before, they just were not well understood in their potency. If chess players didn't control the center of the board, the engines would start to do it and we would have the same epiphany.
