Isaac Newton was appointed master of the Royal Mint because there were so many counterfeit English coins and clipping was a big problem then. He was the one who established standards for guaranteeing each and every coin was genuine, which including adding ridges to coins to ensure they could be identified when they were clipped.

Clipping and counterfeiting English coinage was considered such an unforgivable crime due to the damage it causes the nation and the economy that those found guilty of it were given the death penalty. Yes, they KILLED people who tampered with the coinage, as they deserved. This is downplayed in this article, but it needs to be emphasized.

jews were expelled from England in 1290, but jewish money lenders were reliably contacted by sovereigns who needed money (including Elizabeth I). Cromwell, that fucking rat bastard, let them back in the country in 1657. It should not have been a surprise to anyone that in less than 100 years, English coinage had become so debased that it required appointing Newton to find a solution. Unfortunately, one of the solutions was not a second expulsion of the jews.
